Seeing the musical “Today I can’t get up” at the National Theater before 2023 begins, has made me dream of the possibility that this Dominican theatrical genre, from my point of view the best in Dominican theater, will be able to reactivate itself. .
what is needed for that? In the first place, the support of the brands, the one that allowed a robust life through lavish staging, of works such as “Grease”, “Les Miserables”, “Victor Victoria”, “Kiss of the Spider Woman”, ” Chicago”, “Beauty and the Beast”, “Rent”, “Hairspray”, “Annie”, “Godspell”, “Evita”, etc.
In those days, the quality that was achieved and that “Today I can’t get up” now highlights, positioned the Dominican Republic in the Top 3 in all of Latin America. At the height of Argentina and Mexico. And in some cases, the clutches were superior to the predecessors.
It has happened again. And “Today I can’t get up” is, at least for me, the best of all. The very high level achieved in the dumbbell between artistic technical work and the actors is as beautiful as it is almost perfect.
A few months ago I expressed to one of the organizers of the Cultural Industries Forum the need to take a different approach to these. It is about potentiating traditional art manifestations. And in the case of the dramatic arts, this example of the musical comes in handy.
It is necessary that together with state and private support, and international promotion, the creation of Dominican musicals with their own themes, and high quality production, be encouraged in order to maintain a productive line throughout the year. There are Dominicans who travel to other countries to see musical theater. Why wouldn’t they come from other countries to see our musicals or our productions like the one in question? That is cultural tourism.
And besides, this type of shows can also be exported. Central America, just to give an example, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador, can be important markets for Dominican musical theater. Let’s start in 2023!
