The Museum of Modern Art of Buenos Aires was recognized with the distinction “Accessibility Guidelines”, granted by the Argentine Tourism Quality System, for its desire to eliminate different types of barriers and thus ensure that all its visitors can enjoy the experience offered by its rooms.
The distinction is a recognition of the work on accessibility that the Museum has been carrying out on a sustained basis since 2017, something that places the Museum, under the Ministry of Culture of the City, as a leading institution in guaranteeing the right of people with disabilities to participate in the artistic experience.
During 2018, the Accessibility Project was one of the museum’s work axes and was sustained thanks to a team made up of specialists in education and accessibility.
People with disabilities who want to tour the Moderno can do so: it has face-to-face and digital supports for exhibitions and programming
A diagnosis was prepared together with the Commission for the Full Participation and Inclusion of People with Disabilities and a program of changes and new learning began: staff training, building adaptations to eliminate barriers in the PWD experience, review of signage and communication on the web and networks, incorporation of technology in communication, incorporation of supports and adaptations in rooms and programming, design of care and evacuation protocol. This is how the seal of “accessible museum” was achieved.
The elimination of barriers is not only physical, it is also essential to offer experiences of interaction and participation
In 2022, this plan was consolidated with a transversal work of all the teams involved in the visitor experience (education, communication, editorial, room guards, security and maintenance) and the exhibition design teams (curation, heritage and production). . In addition, an accessibility education and training program was drawn up, so that the entire team gets involved in the task of making an accessible and inclusive museum.
Today, people with disabilities who want to tour the Moderno can do so: has face-to-face and digital supports for exhibitions and programming. There is a tactile room with three reproductions of 3D works for the visually impaired donated by Ninawa Daher Foundation, a sensory cart (mobile and transformable device according to the particularity of each exhibition), accessible backpacks (with an exploration kit specially designed to promote the autonomous journey of people with autism spectrum conditions), social stories to promote the autonomous journey of people with cognitive disabilities, easy reading.
As for the infrastructure, an entrance ramp was placed on the outside of the museum along the sidewalk, an entrance sign in Braille and an ascent and descent sign for people with disabilities. Inside, the access ramp was improved and the following were installed: an automatic opening door, an elevator to access the Café, accessible bathrooms with anti-panic button, reception at regulatory height and elevator with buttons in Braille at height and mention of the floors with voice sound.
The elimination of barriers is not only physical, it is also essential to offer experiences of interaction and participation. El Moderno offers a full schedule of activities aimed at accessible tours, workshops and shows.

The changes brought more people with accessibility problems to the Museum.
During 2022, 3,600 people with disabilities participated in educational activities at Moderno.
The web was also designed to respond to this inclusive paradigm. It has an Accessibility section so that visitors can reach all the information necessary to enjoy a visit. And they added an accessible widget that consists of a panel that drops down on the right side of the web page and offers various accessibility options, such as a live screen reader. By clicking on the “icon with a person in blue” you can see the options of this widget and people with disabilities can access the contents of the web.
