The Popular Participation Movement (MPP) of the Broad Front announced this weekend in his XI Congress its official support for the presidential candidacy of the current mayor of Canelones, Yamandu Orsiahead of the 2024 elections.
Former Senator and Vice President, Lucia Topolansky, praised the figure of Mayor of Canelones and recognized that he could have been a good candidate in the previous elections. He described it as a “Very Valuable Militant” who has a good connection with people.
The president of the FAFernando Pereira said that “the only hope for Uruguay is the Broad Front.”
For his part, former president José ‘Pepe’ Mujica said: “we are going to fight for this comrade to be president, but if it is not his turn we will put our shoulders to what society and the people of the Front decide”.
Orsi stated that the leftist movement faces “a great challenge, which is to remove this government in the 2024 national elections, because what we see hurts us, it hurts us that there are people who are left behind.”

Senator Alejandro Sánchez declared to Underlined that the MPP is willing to put “all its energy” to contribute to the victory of hope. Sánchez criticized the government for not increasing salaries or pensions, for not offering opportunities to the industry and “much less to small and medium-sized agricultural producers.”
Regarding Orsi’s candidacy, the senator stressed that the mayor of Canelones represents a “set of ideas and proposals, a way of seeing things that implies agreement and negotiation.” According to Sánchez, Uruguay needs dialogue and exchange, not polarizations or divisions. “Yamandu has the ability to negotiate and agree with those who think differently to advance in concrete ideas that solve people’s problems”, he concluded.
