The most anticipated return: 'The Mummy' will reunite its original cast

Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz will reawaken the curse that marked an entire generation. This is known about the long-awaited return!

They have passed 25 years since ‘The Mummy’ conquered millions of viewers around the world. Released in 1999 and directed by Stephen Sommersthe film became one of the most emblematic films of adventure cinema, with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz as the leading couple that marked an entire generation.

Now, fans of the saga can celebrate, because according to reports from Variety magazine, Fraser and Weisz would be ready to return to the franchise in a new installment which is already in development under the seal of Universal Pictures.

Although the studio has not issued an official statement, sources close to the project assure that negotiations are advanced and that the return of the original cast would be one of the great attractions of this production.

The direction would be in charge of the duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known as Radio Silenceresponsible for Ready or Not (2019) and the successful revival of the Scream franchise in 2022. Their style combines action, horror and black humor, a formula that could fit perfectly with the spirit of The Mummy.

If realized, this fourth installment would mark the long-awaited return of Brendan Fraser to his most iconic role, that of the intrepid treasure hunter Rick O’Connell, who in the first film accidentally woke up a cursed Egyptian priest, starting one of the highest-grossing sagas of late nineties and early 2000s.

The details of the return of ‘The Mummy’

Released on May 7, 1999, The Mummy was a high-risk production for Universal Pictures. With a budget of 80 million dollars, mixed action, romance, Egyptian mythology and visual effects pioneers for the time.

The result was a global phenomenon: the film grossed more than $416 million at the box office and catapulted Brendan Fraser to international stardom.

The film also established Rachel Weisz as one of the most beloved actresses in adventure cinema, thanks to her role as Evelyn Carnahan an intelligent librarian fascinated by Egyptian history.

The chemistry between both protagonists was one of the great successes of the film, which later gave rise to two sequels: ‘The Mummy’ Returns (2001) and The Mummy: The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008), in addition to the spin-off The Scorpion King, starring Dwayne Johnson.

Directed with an agile and fun tone, The Mummy managed to combine the classic spirit of adventure cinema with the technological advances of its time. The digital effects used to bring Imhotep, played by Arnold Vosloo, to life were considered revolutionary and opened a new stage in the use of CGI in Hollywood.

The possible return of the saga comes at a key moment for Fraser, who is experiencing a renaissance in his career after winning the Oscar in 2023 for The Whale.

His return to such a beloved role could consolidate his definitive return to commercial cinema. For its part, ‘The Mummy’ represents one of the greatest successes of Universal in the 90s, with a total collection of more than 1.4 billion dollars in the entire franchise.

With this new installment, the studio would seek to revive the original spirit of the saga, leaving behind the failed reboot starring Tom Cruise in 2017, that failed to connect with the public.

Although details about the plot or release date are not yet known.the truth is that the news has already sparked enthusiasm among adventure film fans. Everything indicates that The Mummy is ready to awaken once again… and this time, with its original cast at the helm.
