It is said and repeated that there are two presidential candidacies defined for the 2024 elections, and that, as regards the main parties, only one remains to be selected. The statement that there are already two parties with candidates seems categorical, because there is a long way to go before the elections, and in between there is a whole process to validate the candidacies. But the reality is that something very big would have to happen for Luis Abinader, President of the Republic, not to be the candidate of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), as it is also almost certain that former President Leonel Fernández will seek the position again. It will be the fifth time he has done it and the second time he has tried it for People’s Force. That being the case, it is a competition of two, so far. The leonelistas assure that Fernández is in a “solid” second place and celebrate it, but it is logical that he is in that position if there are two defined. It’s like celebrating the silver medal when only two compete.
The options of the PLD
For the October referendum there are six PLD members registered, and from the beginning, three were given a chance. Professor Luis de León, from the Boschista Force and the former Minister of Labor are forced. Maritza Hernández, two figures who are not very assimilated as applicants, as well as Karen Ricardo, who does have experience in internal competitions and even victories, but it seems that this is not her moment. The thing is between Margarita Cedeño, Abel Martínez and Francisco Domínguez Brito. At first, when the competitors entered the ring, the former vice president looked great “on paper,” as the sports writers would say. But in practice, the competition is observed to be more fierce. The truth is that the electoral panorama will not be configured until the purple ones select their candidate. The projections that are made now for the elections of the 24 are premature, because an element is missing.
