The Minister of Health, Jeyson Auza, pointed out this Thursday that Avian flu is not spread between humans and neither by eating poultryas wrong alarms indicate, which misinform the population.
“Avian influenza and its detection in birds and for its species in Bolivia, an animal health emergency has been declaredthe necessary actions are being taken, it is easily contagious between birds, in the world there have only been three contagions from a bird to a human, to date no contagion from one human to another has been reported, that we must tell the Bolivian population and give them a message of tranquility”, said the minister.
An official report from the World Health Organization (WHO) states that infections in humans are not frequent, they are punctual and when they do occur, they do not spread easily.
Auza explained that transmission from a bird to a human can be caused by dried feces or secretions from a bird that is in contact with a human, but so far there has been no contagion between humans and there is no history of contagion due to consumption of bird meat.
“We are always going to make extreme efforts, we recommend that people who are in contact with birds that may have this pathology, strictly comply with the biosecurity measures established by the Ministries of Health and Rural Development and Lands”, he added.
Bolivia activated the National Animal Health Emergency System and recommended increasing security measures in production poultry farms in light of the detection of cases of bird flu in the central department of Cochabamba.
