The MICM highlights payment of debt with the WIPO

He Ministry of IndustryCommerce and MSMEs (MICM) reported that the country has settled a debt accumulated since 1975 with the Organization World Cup Intellectual Property (WIPO). This payment, managed and executed by the MICMcovers the outstanding amounts of almost five decades for a total of 1,186,819.83 dollars.

This amount corresponds to membership feesa commitment that Member States assume as part of their participation in international organizations. Since 2004, ONAPI has been progressively paying the annual fee corresponding to the years prior to 1975.

“The fulfillment of this duty as a Member State marks a historic moment and reaffirms the position of the Republic Dominican as an actor committed to international standards regarding property intellectual”, the entity highlighted in a press release.

The minister of IndustryCommerce and Mipymes, Víctor -Ito- Bisonó, highlighted the strategic relevance of the cancellation of the commitment, since “the payment of this debt historical projects to the Republic Dominican as a reliable and responsible partner on the international stage. This fact allows us to explore new opportunities for collaboration and initiatives that will directly benefit the creators, innovators and entrepreneurs of our country,” he said.

0Bisonó highlighted that this effort also represents a significant step to maintain the Republic Dominican outside the Compliance List of Special Report 301 on Intellectual Propertyissued annually by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR).

This report evaluates the policies and practices of property intellectual of countries, and inclusion in such a list can generate significant trade barriers. Compliance with international obligations positions the country as a safe destination for investment and trade.
