After hearing the sentence of 11 years in effective prison for the crime of conspiracy to rebel against former president Pedro Castillo Due to the coup d’état of December 7, 2022, the former president’s gestures surprised more than one.
And the fact is that the former head of state, contrary to appearing serious or worried, when he heard his sentence, smiled and posed his arms in a particular way.
The psychotherapist Gonzalo Elías analyzed to Peru21 Castillo’s gestures during the reading of the sentence, describing it as an inauthentic and “cynical” response.
According to Elías, the former president’s grimaces and gestures suggest behavior of self-deception and lack of good sense, rather than a serious reaction to the seriousness of the ruling.
“What was perceived were the typical grimaces made by a person who is not sensible, someone who is lying to himself, as seems to be the case with Castillo. He has wanted to convince all his close friends, supporters and followers that he is a victim and that this whole process is a joke, an antics. His gestures are as if to say: ‘Yes, I know that you are a corrupt judiciary, that everything has been sold and that you are going to condemn me, and I am here very angry because I already saw it coming,'” he mentioned.
The specialist contrasted this attitude with what would be expected of a person who reacts honestly to a conviction: “A more serious and honest person would simply react with seriousness, or even with some pain and vulnerability without this meaning breaking down.”
