“It’s not something to brag about, but it’s the most important work being done in the world,” he said while leading the inauguration of the Ichkabal archaeological zone, together with Sheinbaum and the governor of Quintana Roo, Mara Lezama.
According to the president, the project will have a length of 1,554 kilometers, represents an investment of 500,000 million pesos and will allow the development of southern Quintana Roo.
López Obrador and Sheinbaum supervised this Saturday section 5 of the Maya Train, between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, on which a suspension has been ordered to stop the progress of the work.
The organization ‘Sélvame Tren’ has publicly denounced the violation of suspension 1003/2022 in force since the beginning of this year, as the federal government has continued with construction.
Following the installation of the piles that support the elevated viaduct with the railway track on which the train will run, the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) indicated that cement contamination was found in the cenotes of the Mayan Aquifer.
At the same time, the collapse of the roof of one of the cenotes was found due to the drilling carried out for the piles, in addition to the extraction of water without authorization as well as the filling and burial of the cave with stone material.
With this evidence, it was determined that the Environmental Impact Statement issued by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) for the construction of the Mayan Train was violated, which is why a judge granted a suspension.
Section 5 of the Maya Train is 87.7% complete in its construction, according to the Sixth Government Report presented by the president.
