Beyond being an urban space, the Malecón in the city of Cúcuta has become a natural sanctuary where birds, river and city coexist. This ecological corridor reaffirms the environmental potential of Cúcuta and opens new opportunities for sustainable tourism and environmental education.

The past December 9the Mayor’s Office of San José de Cúcutathrough the Tourism Promotion Officein conjunction with ANATO East and the Joint Promotion Corporation of Norte de Santandermade the route ‘Discover the Malecón through its wings’a route designed to make visible the biodiversity present in this important ecological corridor.
The Malecón de Cúcuta, an ecological corridor for bird tourism
The Malecón is characterized by being a gallery forestan ecosystem with permanent arborization throughout the year, which offers ideal conditions for the presence of resident and migratory birds. This natural wealth makes the sector one of the urban spaces with the greatest potential for bird watching in Cúcuta and in eastern Colombia.
During the day, attendees were able to identify 39 species of birdsamong which stood out the waterfowl such as herons, cormorants and kingfishers, species that directly depend on the Pamplonita River as a food source.
Likewise, birds typical of the tropical dry forestsuch as macaws, royal parrots, parakeets and parakeets, which add color and life to the landscape.
Among the emblematic species registered are the cucuteño turpial (Icterus nigrogularis) and diverse tanagersrecognized for their striking plumage.
More than 140 species identified on the banks of the Pamplonita River
Although 39 species were sighted on this outing, previous studies carried out by the birder Wilson Ortega have allowed us to identify 82 species on this same route. When adding the records of other watchers in the region, the figure rises to 142 species of birds identified on the banks of the Pamplonita River, positioning the Malecón as one of the urban points with the greatest biological diversity in the region.

Cúcuta, a growing destination for bird tourism
In addition to the Malecón, the city has other ideal settings for bird tourismas Villa Silvania and the Hotel Bolivarwhere visitors can live unique experiences in contact with local biodiversity.
Cúcuta is also part of the route ‘Birds without Borders’a cross-border initiative led by ANATO East chapter and Jumbo Tripswhich seeks to position the region as a strategic destination for bird tourism.
The Municipal Administration invites citizens to actively participate in these initiatives, to responsibly enjoy natural spaces and become guardians of local fauna, preserving the Malecón as a symbol of the natural wealth of Cúcuta.
