“The main responsibility for achieving the freedom of Cuba belongs to all Cubans”

Laritza Diversent Cubalex

MIAMI, United States.- Laritza Diversent, director of the Cubalex Legal Information Center, spoke with CubaNet this Saturday about the responsibility of achieving the freedom of the island and what her work has meant in the last 11 years.

For the Cuban lawyer, “the main responsibility for achieving freedom in Cuba does not lie in a specific place or in a single person, it belongs to all Cubans, wherever they are.”

Diversent assures that the main mission of all Cubans “is to unite and go against that system that has been restricting our freedoms for more than 60 years, that has even kidnapped our families and our country, because we cannot return.”

“Putting the responsibility only on those who are in Cuba would be limiting ourselves. Those who are abroad sending remittances and with their relatives in Cuba are also worrying about the country. They also have the right to make decisions and to be heard, and they also have the responsibility to fight for change on the island,” he explained.

“It is a shared responsibility among all of us who feel and love Cuba,” he said.

During her interview, Laritza Diversent spoke about the human rights situation in the communist country, and assured that, although “we cannot say that there is a better situation, there are circumstances that are different from five years ago.”

And although repression has increased, he said, “we as civil society have learned a lot. What seems like a dark scenario in the future of Cuba represents a step and a challenge for those of us who are working on human rights.”

The director of Cubalex recommended that the new activists look back and see what others did, “the actions that failed and were successful, in order to continue walking together.”

Regarding her work at Cubalex, which provides legal advice to Cubans on the island, the lawyer assures that it has been “a school for me and for many of us who continue to work in the organization today, and what speaks for us is the work what do we do”.
