The machinery sector projects a 2.5% drop in annual sales

Industrial production is stable in October for the second month, says CNI

Revenues from the machinery and equipment industry changed 0.1% in September compared to the same month last year. The balance was released today (26) by the Brazilian Machinery and Equipment Industry Association (Abimaq). The machinery sector projects a 2.5% drop in annual sales

Compared to the previous month, there was growth of 4.7%. Total net revenue was R$ 29.7 billion. From January to September, the sector accumulates a fall of 4.4%. For the year, Abimaq projects a decline of 2.5% in revenue.

“In the case of the machinery sector, at the beginning of the year, we were forecasting a growth of 3%. We had the problem during the year, with the increase in interest rates, which went up a lot at the end, whether for working capital or for investments, and this harmed the result a little”, evaluated José Velloso, president of Abimaq.

The result, according to Abimaq, reflects an improvement in sales in the domestic market. After three consecutive months of falling sales in the domestic market, there was growth of 2.3% in relation to September last year.

Year-to-date, however, from January to September, domestic sales fell by 5.8%. Despite remaining negative, there was an improvement in relation to the last release, when the percentage was -6.9%.

The sector’s exports grew by 6.6% compared to September 2021, but the impact on total sales revenue in the period was negative (-8.4%), in view of exchange rate parity and inflation.

In the analysis by segment, in comparison with August, only exports of machines for oil and renewable energy had growth (3.9%). In the annual comparison, the numbers are positive for all groups, with an emphasis also on oil, which registers a 104.5% increase in revenue from exports.

“The only two groups that didn’t grow were machines for infrastructure and machines for transformation. The others all grew during this period”, points out Maria Cristina Zanella, Divisional Manager of Economics, Statistics and Competitiveness at Abimaq.

She adds that, for the last quarter of the year, growth is projected in relation to the third quarter, “but that apparently will not compensate for the fall that we have accumulated since the beginning of the year”. “We are forecasting a drop of around 2.5% this year, due to the much weaker first half.”
