Benedict XVI died today at the age of 95 in the Vatican monastery where he had resided since his historic resignation in 2013, and his funeral will be next week, in a sober and solemn manner, following his will.

Pope Francis will officiate the funeral for the emeritus pontiff Benedict XVI on January 5, at 9:30 am (8:30 GMT), in Saint Peter’s Square, Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni reported.

The Vatican reported today the death of the German pontiff, who had resigned in 2013, with a brief statement- “It is with regret that I announce that Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has passed away at 9:34 a.m. (8:34 a.m. GMT) in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery of the Vatican. According to Bruni, Benedict XVI left as his last will that his funeral be “as simple as possible. Solemn but sober.”

He also explained that at the time of his death Benedict XVI was with his faithful secretary, Monsignor George Ganswein, and with the four women from the “Memores Domini” movement who have cared for him for almost 10 years in which he lived in the Mater Ecclesiae monastery. in the Vatican gardens, as they took turns not to leave him alone for a moment.
