MIAMI, United States. — The renowned juggler Germán Muñoz, one of the most outstanding figures in the recent history of the circus in Cuba, died last night in Havana at the age of 61, reported the National Council of Performing Arts.
Winner of the 2021 National Award for Circus Arts, Muñoz was considered “a legend of contemporary Cuban circus” and numerous contributions to the development of circus art on the island are recognized.
“Descendant of one of the most famous surnames in the history of this specialty on the island, he showed his talent in Cuba and in more than 10 countries in Latin America and Europe. Among his merits, the creation and rescue of attractive and difficult juggling acts stands out, ”says the National Council of Performing Arts in a note published this Thursday.
Germán Muñoz founded the Havana Company in 1996, “whose innovative style has been successfully valued by specialized critics.”
According to the National Council for the Performing Arts itself, the late artist “achieved awards and recognition on the great circus stages of the world.”
The statement recalls that Muñoz “shared unforgettable moments in his career” with figures of the stature of Liza Minnelli and Tina Turner, as well as Princess Estefanía of Monaco, “a principality in which he performed with great success.”
Germán Muñoz possessed the distinctions for the National Culture of the Ministry of Culture (MINCULT), the Raúl Gómez García order of the Union of Culture Workers and the Turán prize for the work of life, which he awards to the Association of Performing Artists of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC).
