The Itaipu binational dam on the Paraná river reported that starting this Saturday the floodgates of the hydroelectric power plant will be opened to alleviate the volume of water after heavy rains in Brazil, which could lead to an increase in the flow of the river on Argentine territory.
Thus, the Technical Directorate of the Entity dependent on Brazil and Paraguay foresees said opening due to “the storage conditions of the reservoirs upstream of the hydroelectric plant.”
“This significant increase in storage levels is especially due to the rains that have been recorded since the end of November in much of Brazil,” said the statement from the binational entity.
This situation “makes the operation necessary, taking into account that there was a recovery in the levels of the main reservoirs of the Brazilian interconnected system (SIN-BR) after the water crisis of 2021-2022, reaching 65.8%.”
“This significant increase in storage levels is due especially to the rains that have been recorded since the end of November in a large part of Brazil,” said the statement from the binational entity.
The discharges will be coordinated by the Itaipu Operations Superintendence and the National Operator of the Brazilian Electric System, and will have as a result, in addition to controlling the level of the reservoir, contributing to improving navigation conditions on the Paraná River, mainly from the confluence with the Paraguayan river.
