The justice of Córdoba postponed until next week the investigation of the nurse, arrested and accused in the case that is investigating the death of five babies born healthy at the Ramón Carrillo Maternity Neonatal Hospital in Córdobato answer about the accusatory extension, informed a judicial source.
Carlos Nayi, one of the plaintiff lawyers, told Télam that the prosecutor Raúl Garzón agreed to the request of the nurse’s defense brenda aguero (27) to postpone the procedural process due to problems with the lawyer’s schedule, and that the new date will be established in the next few days.
Prosecutor Garzón had summoned nurse Agüero to the investigation for Monday’s session to respond to the extension of the accusation of ‘attempted murder’ of eight surviving children.
To this new accusation is added that of “qualified homicide by the use of insidious means” on the five deceased babies between March and May of this year, all occurred in the maternal and neonatal hospital in the Cordoba capital.
Within the framework of the investigation, in the first week of September, the Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team (EAAF) exhumed the bodies of three babies for scientific study to try to determine the identity and cause of their deaths.
The exhumations corresponded to babies who had been born and died on March 18, April 23 and May 23, in all cases that occurred this year.
At the beginning of August, prosecutor Garzón opened an investigation based on complaints made in June, regarding five cases of “suspicious deaths” of babies born healthy in the neonatal provincial hospital.
The cause has seven defendantsamong them the nurse Agüero, the only one detained and accused directly linked to the deaths, who supposedly would have injected substances “incompatible with life” to newborns, such as potassium and other components that are still to be established.
The remaining defendants are the former Minister of Health Diego Cardozo; the former Secretary of Health, Pablo Carvajal and the former deputy director of the hospital, Alejandro Salama, for the crime of “omission of the duties of a public official”as stated in the file.
Also, the former director Liliana Asís; and the former heads of the neonatal areas Marta Gómez Flores and Adriana Morales for the crimes of “omission of the duties of a public official and ideological falsehood.”
