The International Criminal Court (ICC) announced that it will open a formal investigation to Venezuela “to establish the truth in accordance with the Rome Statute.” The decision is made after the visit of the high court prosecutor, Karim Khan, to the country.
The decision memorandum explains that “the ICC prosecutor has concluded preliminary examination of the situation in Venezuela and has determined that an investigation should be opened to establish the truth in accordance with the Rome Statute ”.
After the announcement, Venezuelan President Nicolás MaduroHe said he respected, but did not share the decision made by the International Criminal Court to advance the investigative process within the framework of the case opened against the country.
“After this evaluation and this debate, the prosecutor (of the ICC) has decided to move on to the next phase to search for the truth. We respect your decision as a State, although we have stated that we don’t share it”Maduro said.
