The initiatives of "Plan C" from AMLO than Sheinbaum "will revive"

In the first case, he stated that he seeks to “protect biodiversity and preserve corn as a Mexican cultural and food symbol,” while the leader of the federal deputies of Morena, Ricardo Monreal, said that he will also propose that human consumption be prohibited. of that product.

Both announcements came after the United States won the T-MEC dispute settlement panel, in which it was concluded that the presidential decree that López Obrador issued in 2020 to prohibit the use of genetically modified seeds in Mexico violates the trade agreement. and lacks scientific support.

On February 5, the former president proposed to Congress an initiative to prohibit in the Constitution the use of transgenic corn for food in the country, but only the opinion of that proposal was endorsed and it was not submitted for approval by the plenary session.

Today that López Obrador initiative has already lost validity, since it came from the 65th Legislature that concluded last August and was not approved by the plenary session in the first period of the current 66th Legislature, which ended on December 12.

Therefore, to return to the issue, the president or Congress must present new initiatives on the matter.

The second initiative that died due to lack of activity in the Chamber of Deputies was the electoral reform proposed by the former president, which was not even ruled.

The former president proposed, among other things, reducing party financing by half, cutting the number of senators from 128 to 64 and the number of deputies from 500 to 300.

In May, as a presidential candidate, Sheinbaum offered to promote it and, upon taking office in October, she included it in her commitments with the main argument of generating savings.

There is, indicated in his document “100 steps for transformation”, the need for a comprehensive electoral reform.

Its proposal eight indicates: “We will promote the reform of the electoral system that strengthens participatory democracy, the revocation of mandate, the decision of the people through consultations, the reduction of the cost of the INE and the Electoral Court and the election of electoral advisors and the magistrates by popular vote.”

The objective – he added – is to address problems “among them is the high cost of electoral institutions such as the INE, electoral courts and political parties.”

Furthermore, in his proposal nine he proposed: “No Re-election. There should be no re-election to any elected office starting with the next presidential election in 2030.” Last November 7, Sheinbaum announced that it will send its initiative in 2025.
