Seven months have passed since the signing and endorsement of the loan agreement between the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Ministry of Public Works, to begin mitigation work on the Juan Díaz River and thus avoid the flooding problems that have afflicted the region for years. the residents of Juan Díaz and Don Bosco.
Don Bosco’s representative, Guillermo Bermúdez, does not take his finger off the line, and from the Municipal Council he insists on the need for the project to be speeded up, since it is an issue that has been dragged on for decades. “Time continues to pass but there is no direct statement. We are quite concerned because we see inaction on the part of the MOP, and this project would be a solution to end the problem of flooding in this entire area,” said Bermúdez in a recent interview.
He assured that in his interventions inside the Municipal Palace he has even asked the mayor of the capital, José Luis Fábrega, since within the project he has a percentage of control responsibility. But all these efforts seem to go on deaf ears, he said.
Bermúdez recalled that a few weeks ago a meeting was held with some deputies from the area to make them aware of the issue and that days later, there was a meeting at the MOP, in which Minister Rafael Sabonge participated, who pointed out that progress was being made, however, explains the representative of Don Bosco, we do not see a real pronouncement on their part”.
“We have a golden opportunity to solve this problem in Juan Díaz, we have the resource, what there is is no real will on the part of the government.” he added.
“The residents of Juan Díaz and Don Bosco live in anxiety wondering if with some of the more than 70 tropical waves that are going to pass through Panama they will be flooded again and once again begin to have that effect on their quality of life of not even being able to sleep. when the rains start,” said Bermúdez.
