June 28 marks International Pride Day. LGBTQ+. There, the police raids on the Stonewall Inn bar in New York are commemorated. From the Municipality of Montevideo (IM) will honor a group of LGBTIQ+ activists from Uruguay, who on this date, but 30 years ago, took to the streets for the first time.
At that time they sought to occupy public space, to say “enough discrimination.” With this exhibition “the country’s LGBT+ memory archives will be brought to the present, to value the courage of those activists. Most were members of the HU collectives (United Homosexuals, convening organization), MIH (Homosexual Integration Movement) and independent activists such as Diana Mines, who portrayed that moment, “is indicated from the commune.
Mixed activities
That same day, at 5:30 p.m. in the Plaza de la Diversidad, there will be an artistic intervention. Later, at 6:30 p.m., the discussion “International LGBT+ Pride Day: the path of struggle” will take place at the Solís theater, where the history and present of diversity in Uruguay will be worked on. It will feature a performance by artist Fabricio Guaragna, who will also host the event, and DJ Baby Wild.
The discussion proposes a historical journey since the creation of this day, on June 28, 1969. In Uruguay, after the departure of the military dictatorship, the different LGBTIQ+ groups began to organize, culminating in the first concentration in Plaza Libertad in Montevideo.
The protagonists of this concentration will be present at the discussion, sharing their experiences. Subsequently, the new generation of activists, younger, will give their views on the current diversity agenda.
