The highest authority of the IMF arrives in Peru

Without a doubt, the summit APEC that will be developed in the Peru Next week will mark a milestone for the topics that will be addressed, but also for the characters who will arrive in our country. Among the notable visitors is the managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva.

Look: Joe Biden will arrive in Peru less than two months after leaving the US presidency.

The head of the IMF, a citizen of Bulgaria, came to office on October 1, 2019 and this year she was re-elected to the position for a period of five more years. Previously, she was general director of the World Bank (WB), interim president of the World Bank Group, among other senior positions.

He has a PhD in Economic Sciences and a master’s degree in Political Economy and Sociology from the Bulgarian University of National and World Economy.

The highest authority of the IMF received the invitation in July of this year from the then chancellor Javier González-Olaechea. At the meeting they also talked about the IMF as a strategic partner for the sustainable development and economic progress of Peru.

He had a rapprochement with Peru in November 2023 when he met with President Dina Boluarte within the framework of APEC in the United States. As indicated at that time by the Presidency, at the meeting the director of the IMF highlighted the management of economic policies and inflation.

VISION OF THE REGION

A few weeks ago, the IMF representative referred to the context that Latin America is experiencing and pointed out that the region “faces a disappointing growth trajectory.” In that sense, he pointed out that it is necessary to focus on how to improve.

The IMF estimates that Latin America will grow around 2.1% this year and 2.5% next year. In the case of Peru, the projection was recently updated to 3%, above the 2.5% that was expected in April.

Regarding global growth, Kristalina Georgieva stated that “families still suffer from high prices” and pointed out that progress is not as expected.

“To everyone I ask here, how is your economy? The answer is good. How is the mood of your people? The answer is not so good. Families continue to suffer from high prices and global growth is anemic,” he commented.
