In this way, the Family Code —whose version 25 had already been endorsed last July by the National Assembly and that this Sunday was approved by the majority of the Cuban voters participating in the referendum, it officially becomes law and will begin to govern on the Island.
The norm will enter into force after it is published in a special edition in the Official Gazette this Tuesday, according to what was explained in the act by Homero Acosta, secretary of the Council of State of Cuba.
The code had already been previously published in the Official Gazette “for general knowledge” after having been approved by the Island’s parliament. Then, the publication assured that it would enter into force “once ratified in the Popular Referendum.”
As reported this Monday morning by the National Electoral Council of Cuba (CEN), the Code was approved by 66.87% of voters, while 33.13% rejected it. In total, out of a list of 8,447,467 people with the right to vote, 3,936,790 supported the law, while 1,950,090 voted against it. In addition, 2,195,681 did not attend the polls (26%) and 364,906 invalid ballots were counted (4.3%).
Although these results are not yet official, but rather were given in a preliminary way, since some schools were missing to be computed, the CEN assured that the trend was “irreversible” and officially declared the triumph of the “Yes”, which was the bet of the authorities and the official media, which launched an intense propaganda campaign for this option.
