The heads of US and Nicaraguan diplomacy talk about the "importance of a constructive dialogue"

The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, spoke this Friday with the Nicaraguan Foreign Minister, Denis Moncada, “about the importance of a constructive dialogue,” according to the diplomat himself.

“After the release of 222 Nicaraguan political prisoners yesterday, today I spoke with Foreign Minister Moncada about the importance of a constructive dialogue that leads to building a better future for Nicaraguans,” Blinken said through his official Twitter account.

This rapprochement of Washington to Managua occurs one day after the release of more than 222 political prisoners who were in cells classified as “inhumane” by human rights organizations. All of them have been initially welcomed in the US and this Friday Spain has offered to help them with family reunification.

After the release, Blinken said that this fact marked a constructive precedent and opened the door to a greater “dialogue between the United States and Nicaragua”, lowering the tension between the two countries that have been maintained for 5 years since a political crisis began in Managua. .

Washington has imposed sanctions against Managua since 2018 for human rights violations and has accused Ortega officials of undermining democracy.

Ortega has called the sanctions “coercive” because, according to him, they sought to destabilize his government, also accused by the Nicaraguan opposition of being illegitimate for persecuting its opponents and perpetuating itself in power through fraudulent electoral processes.

Since the beginning of the political crisis in Nicaragua in 2018, Ortega has called two national dialogues in the country, which, according to the opposition, have not produced results and have been suspended due to the lack of agreements.

The United States has reiterated on different occasions that the only peaceful way to overcome the crisis is through a “transparent” dialogue, which to date has not materialized.
