One of the federal government’s priorities for 2025 is to lower the price of food that reaches workers’ tables. The guidance was given by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to his team this Monday (20), during the first meeting of the year with his ministers.
According to the president, the new year will be a harvest for many of the public policies initiated after what he called a period of reconstitution of several portfolios, according to him, dismantled during the previous government. He demanded from his ministers an increasing effort to advance the policies that have been implemented.
“We now have a very important theme, which is reconstruction, unity and cheap food on the worker’s table, because food is expensive on the worker’s desk. All ministers know that food is expensive. It is our task to ensure that food reaches the tables of working people, housewives and the Brazilian people in conditions compatible with the salary they earn”, said the president during his opening speech at the meeting.
Fighting misinformation
The president, who said he promptly recovered from surgery he had on his head after a fall, he reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining democracy. He asked his ministers to stay alert to avoid giving arguments to opponents who, according to him, have already started campaigning for next year’s presidential elections.
“From now on, no minister will be able to issue an ordinance that then creates confusion, without this ordinance passing through the Presidency of the Republic, through the Civil House,” he said.
According to Lula, the 2026 elections have already begun for his opponents. “You only need to look at the internet to see that they are already campaigning. And we cannot anticipate the campaign, because we have to work to deliver what they need to the people”, said the president.
“I have a cause, and it is what will motivate me in 2025, which is to not allow, under any circumstances, this country to return to the horror of my predecessor’s mandate, ensuring that democracy remains in this country . We do not want to hand this country back to neo-fascism, neo-Nazism, authoritarianism. And we need to say it loud and clear: we want to elect a government to continue the democratic process in this country,” he added.
The president also cited some achievements in the area of education and praised the approval of the law that does not allow the use of cell phones by children in the school environment. “This is a system to protect our children. It is a system to protect our education and our teachers. We are prioritizing education, humanism, and not algorithms to make up our people’s minds”, he argued.

Lula also spoke about his expectations of maintaining good relations with the United States. President-elect Donald Trump takes possession on Monday afternoon.
“There are people who say that Trump’s election could cause problems for global democracy. Trump was elected to govern the United States. I, as president of Brazil, hope that he will manage fruitfully, so that the Brazilian and American people improve, and that the Americans continue to be Brazil’s historic partner,” he said. Lula also added that he wants peace, harmony and diplomacy with all countries.
