The Ministry of Culture sent its second letter to Spain, in which demands again the repatriation of the Quimbaya collection to the countrywhich is made up of 122 pre-Hispanic pieces, which are located in the Museo América in Madrid (Spain).
This verbal note was sent on December 12 by the Colombian government to Spain and in it indicates that it expects a high-level dialogue for the repatriation of this collection.
“We sent a verbal note from the Foreign Ministry, we consider that legitimately due to the ruling we have from the Constitutional Court of 2017, We have our right to issue this verbal note, we hope it will be answered through diplomatic channels and let us know what the Spanish Government thinks about the Quimbaya collection, and our intentions for it to be returned to the country,” said the Minister of Cultures, Arts and Knowledge, Juan David Correa.

The senior official reiterated that This pre-Hispanic collection has a significant and symbolic heritage value. He also called on the Spanish government.
“We consider that the Quimbaya collection belongs to the Colombian people and to the identity of the native peoples of Colombia; we cannot forget that these ritual objects had a deep relationship with the territory and also that they contained knowledge,” he added.
Additionally, the minister He criticized that the Quimbaya collection was given to Spain in the 19th century, without any consent of the Congress of the Republic.
“Spain must understand that as long as heritage things must return whether or not there have been gestures in the past; in the case of the collection gesture Quimbaya was something spurious and illegitimate that President Holguín took to give away something that did not belong to him.a”, he pointed out.
Finally, the minister emphasized that the Colombian Government will not give in to the claims of having a horizontal conversation with Spainsince there was no response to the first request for repatriation of the pieces.
