The Government says that the unemployment rate fell to 4.2%

State numbers paint a good economic picture. Until May of this year, the unemployment rate in the country It fell to 4.2%, reported the Development Planning Ministry, which maintains that the figure “ratifies the process of rebuilding the Bolivian economy.” However, the Millennium Foundation affirms that the situation in the labor market remained very precarious.

The Minister of Development Planning, yesErgio Cusicanqui, explained that, in July 2020, during the administration of Jeanine Áñez, the unemployment rate reached 11.6%, but as of May 2022, this economic indicator fell to 4.2%; that is, it fell by 7.4 percentage points, in that period of time, he explained according to the ABI report.

This occurs in the process and within the framework of the reconstruction of the Bolivian economy, (in) a framework of stability, (in) a framework of return to the path of economic growth. You have been able to witness what is happening in many countries in Latin America and in the world”, he remarked.

Along these lines, he assured that many countries suffer from economic and social instability, but in the case of Bolivia “economic stability is enjoyed, because it returned to the path of economic growth”.

Government data also indicates that the employed population increased by 1.2 million, from July 2020 to May 2022. Meanwhile, between July 2020 and May 2022, the unemployed population fell by 229,000 people.

The unemployment rate for women fell from 11.7% in 2020 to 5.2% in May 2022; while, in men, this indicator fell from 11.8% in 2020 to 3.3% in May of this year.

Meanwhile, the youth unemployment rate, which in July 2020 it reached 19.2%, it fell to around 7% as of May this yearwhich “again confirms this downward trend in this economic indicator.”

However, in its recent report, the Millennium Foundation maintained that the situation in the labor market remained very precariousgiven the reduced demand for employment in companies and the incessant increase in informal and self-employment.

“The underemployment rate also fell, but remained at a higher level than in previous years, and with a huge gap against women,” says the report.

Millennium ensures that Given the lower demand for workers, the population chose to work on their ownmainly in trade activities and other associated services.
