The government promotes an integration plan to serve migrants

The National Migration Board (JNM) launched the First Plan for the Integration of Migrants and Refugees, to ensure that these populations are inserted in Uruguay and promote their contribution to national development. Sectoral workshops will be presented every month, in which the state institutions involved and civil society organizations will participate.

According to a report from the Presidency of the Republic, the activity was held on Monday 8 at the Executive Tower and was attended by the undersecretary of Foreign Affairs and president of the JNM, Carolina Ache Batlle; the executive director of the Uruguayan Agency for International Cooperation, Mariano Berro; the head of mission of the International Organization for Migration in Uruguay, Tanja Pacifico; the regional representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for South America, Juan Carlos Murillo, and the ambassador of Costa Rica in Uruguay, Irinia María Elizondo Delgado.

The preparation of the plan, which will last until December of this year, is promoted by the JNM and the Refugee Commission. To specify it, a workshop will be held, in which the work methodology for the design of the project will be addressed. Efforts are being made to design a comprehensive, transversal and intersectoral strategy that encompasses the entire national territory and the different levels of government. Monitoring and evaluation will also be included, whose reference is Costa Rica, which is carrying out the third edition.

In his speech, Ache expressed that Uruguay recently improved its regulations on migration and refuge, by creating the National Migration Board and the Refugee Commission as rectors in the matter. In this sense, he indicated that the policy that is applied is aimed at regularizing and documenting migrants and people in need of protection. He added that this line of work is recognized in the world.

Mariano Berro, meanwhile, highlighted the role of all the agencies involved in developing the plan and thanked Costa Rica for its contributions to the process.

The JNM, chaired by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and headed by Ambassador Ricardo Duarte, seeks to systematize current policies, make a diagnosis and set objectives for priority actions. This body is also made up of delegates from the Presidency of the Republic and the Ministries of the Interior, Labor and Social Security (MTSS) and Social Development (Mides).
