In the framework of the International Day of the Fight Against Child abusewhich is commemorated annually every April 25, the Government of the City of Buenos Aires joined a global initiative that seeks to eradicate any type of violence against children and adolescents.
This is the global program “End Violence-inspire” (End violence-inspire), created in 2016 by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The main objective of this campaign is “to make societies aware of the problem of the violence and the child abuse”, a scourge that, in 2021 alone, affected thousands of children from Buenos Aires.
According to official data from the Tutelary Public Ministry, between January and December 2021, around 17,000 girls and boys were victims of child abuseexploitation, human trafficking, and/or physical and psychological abuse in the City of Buenos Aires.
“From the Government of Buenos Aires we join the global commitment to eradicate this terrible scourge. Today we have the responsibility to create the necessary mechanisms to eliminate child violence and provide our children with a safe city to live in”, highlighted the head of the City, Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, during the launch of the campaign.
But CABA was not the only city that recently joined this UN strategy, The Brazilian cities of Sao Paulo and Pelotas (in the state of Rio Grande do Sul) also signed up to participate in this initiative.
Eradication of child violence in the world
In 2015, during a UNICEF forum on child abuse, presidents and heads of government from around the world signed a commitment to eradicate all types of violence or child abuse by 2030. A goal that is still a long way off to be fulfilled
According to UNICEF estimates, between 2020 and 2021, around 1,000 million children and adolescents were victims of violence, abuse or abandonment throughout the planeta figure that almost triples the 400 million cases registered between 2018 and 2019, just before the arrival of the pandemic.
