The French government recommends that its citizens avoid travelling to Venezuela

Following the announcement of the arrest of two Spanish citizens, three Americans and a Czech by the Venezuelan authorities, the French government is asking its citizens in the Caribbean country to avoid expressions about the political situation in public spaces.

Likewise, it urged French nationals in the country to stay away from demonstrations of “any political nature.”

The recommendation was published on Sunday by the crisis and support centre of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, following the announcement by Diosdado Cabello, Minister of the Interior and Justice, on 14 September regarding the arrest of two Spanish citizens, three Americans and a Czech. These detainees are accused of participating in an operation to “destabilise” the country.

“Those who are already in the country are advised to stay away from any political demonstrations and from reporting on the political and security situation. They are also advised to avoid any expressions about the Venezuelan political situation in public spaces,” the Foreign Ministry said in its statement.

The detained Spaniards were identified as José María Basoa Valdovinos and Andrés Martínez Adasme. Their relatives said on Sunday that both men were in the country for tourism purposes.

Both the Spanish and US governments have rejected allegations of participating in an operation to overthrow current President Nicolás Maduro.

At least since 2019, Venezuela is part of the list of 20 countries that the United States recommends against travel, as it is considered to be at risk level 4, known as “do not travel.” Countries such as Afghanistan, Belarus and Haiti are also on the list.
