MIAMI, United States. — The German soccer team, four times world champion (1954, 1974, 1990, 2014), was eliminated in the group stage of Qatar 2022, in what can be considered the biggest surprise of the competition so far.
The Germans had to win – and they did – and wait for the other pre-competition favorites in Group E, Spain, to defeat Japan. However, it was the Japanese who prevailed over the Iberians, who finished with the same number of points as the Germans, but with a better goal difference.
Germany came to see themselves at a 1-2 disadvantage against Costa Rica, a result that left out both Germans and Spaniards. However, the Bavarians took the game forward and ended up winning 4-2, with goals from Serge Gnabry, Kai Havertz (2) and Niclas Füllkrug.

In the other match, Japan took advantage of Spain’s confusion and condemned them to second place with a 2-1 victory. Ritsu Dōan and Ao Tanaka combined to thwart Álvaro Morata’s opening goal.
Now, the Japanese cast will face Croatia in the round of 16, while Spain will meet Morocco in a relatively accessible crossroads for those led by Luis Enrique.
So far, 14 teams have already qualified for the round of 16, including Brazil and Portugal, who will face Cameroon and South Korea tomorrow, respectively, to secure first place in their knockout brackets.
The next round of the World Cup will begin next Saturday, with the duels Netherlands vs. United States and Argentina vs. Australia. On Sunday the faces France vs. Poland and England vs. Senegal, while on Monday Japan and Croatia will clash. The rest of the round of 16 pairings will be arranged when the four matches tomorrow are completed.
