The former rector of the University of Panama, Gustavo García de Paredes, is acquitted for the crime of embezzlement


In their decision, the magistrates of the Superior Court for the Settlement of Criminal Cases of the First Judicial District of Panama decreed the nullity of the process in relation to the crime of embezzlement against the former rector.

The Superior Court for the Settlement of Criminal Cases of the First Judicial District of Panama, decreed the partial annulment of mixed order number 9 of March 25, 2022, which established the dismissal of the former rector of the University of Panama, Gustavo García de Paredes, for the crime of embezzlement

This annulment regarding the crime of embezzlement includes Adrián Cuevas González who was also called to trial for this crime, in addition to Messrs. Vicente Archibold Blake, José Pinzón Morales, José Humberto Santos Castillo and Maria Del Pilar Castañón Álvarez, provisionally dismissed for this crime.

The case is related to the lease contract No. 2008-11, agreed at the time between the University of Panama, where, according to the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor, the contractor company was conveniently favored, such as reductions in the lease fee for the construction and the resolution subject to appeal.

In their decision, the magistrates of the Superior Court for the Settlement of Criminal Cases of the First Judicial District of Panama decreed the nullity of the process in relation to the crime of embezzlement against the former rector.

The decision was endorsed by judges José Hoo Justiniani and Manuel Mata Avendaño.
