The foreign ministries of Cuba and Chile meet to "promote bilateral cooperation"

(EFE).- Cuba and Chile promised this Wednesday to “promote bilateral economic, commercial and cultural cooperation” after meet in havana representatives of the foreign ministries of both countries.

The Chilean and Cuban representatives held the VI Meeting of the Inter-Foreign Ministry Political Consultation Mechanism in the island capital, the first since 2011. It is the first formal rapprochement between Santiago and Havana since the entry into power of the Chilean president, Gabriel Boric at the beginning of 2022.

The delegations were headed by the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, Josefina Vidal Ferreiro, and the Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs of Chile, Ximena Fuentes Torrijo.

According to a statement from the island’s foreign ministry, both parties “exchanged regional and international challenges, agreeing on the importance of maintaining a united region.”

Gabriel Boric was one of the leaders who criticized last year the exclusion of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela from the Summit of the Americas held in Los Angeles

In addition, “they reviewed various issues of bilateral interest and identified areas with potential to advance in the strengthening of relations.”

Gabriel Boric was one of the leaders who criticized last year the exclusion of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela from the Summit of the Americas held in the US city of Los Angeles.

However, the Andean president has been critical of his Nicaraguan counterpart Daniel Ortega – a close ally of Havana – as well as the political situation in Venezuela, governed by Nicolás Maduro.

In November, during a visit to Mexico, Boric stated that “Latin America cannot be silent” in the face of human rights violations in Latin America and expressly denounced the situation of “political prisoners.” In Nicaragua.

Weeks later, at the XXII Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA), held in Havana, Maduro charged against what he considered “the cowardly left”, without directly mentioning Boric .
