The foreign minister is summoned to answer what will happen with the issuance of passports in the country

The Attorney General’s Office and the Comptroller General’s Office summoned some government officials on Tuesday to find out how the passport issuing process is going in the country. This considering that The contract with the current service provider ends on October 2nd. Thomas Greg & Sons.

The meeting will take place in the afternoon and will bring together Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo, the manager of the National Printing Office, Viviana León Herrera, and the Minister of the Interior, Juan Fernando Cristo. The objective is to discuss the strategy that the Executive is considering for avoid a possible crisis due to the production of these documents after the expiration of the current tender.

It should be remembered that a few days ago, León announced that the National Printing Office will be the entity in charge of assuming this task starting in September 2025. However, the uncertainty lies in what will happen in the 11 month period that exists between the termination of the current contract and the one that ties.

“The first stage is the one we are currently in, which is contract 356 of 2023, which is the one we are currently in, with a private partner. Starting on October 3rd, it will be the transition stage and starting in September 2025, it is another stage, which is the third phase, where the National Printing Office will participate,” the official said.

In addition, the Attorney General’s Office has already alerted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs about problems with passports, due to the constant and repetitive failures which presents the platform for scheduling appointments.

“In its preventive actions, the control entity, in working groups, urged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to rethink the current model of appointment scheduling, which continues to present countless complaints from users with situations such as unavailability of the portal, limited hours and even the appearance of processors outside the entity,” the Public Prosecutor’s Office highlighted last week.
