The foreign minister acknowledges that there is a dictatorship in Venezuela

Criticism of his statements stating that “Venezuela’s problems must be resolved by Venezuelans” forced the new foreign minister Elmer Schialer to clarify his comments the day before.

This happened a week ago, as reported by Perú21.

“Yesterday, upon leaving (the Government Palace), in a very quick statement to the press, I was asked about several issues, including the serious situation in Venezuela and that is why I take this opportunity to point out clearly that there is no change in Peru’s position regarding the situation in Venezuela, let that be clear,” he stressed in an interview with TV Peru on that date.

The foreign minister also expressed concern about the way his response was highlighted in several media headlines, adding that this could lead to an “unfortunate double interpretation if one does not listen to it in its entirety and only focuses on the headline.”

“Therefore, I reaffirm that we maintain a firm position in defense of democracy in Venezuela, of democratic principles,” he added.
