The New Jorge Chavez International Airport is getting closer to opening its doors. This December 28, the first test flight was carried out from the second runway and new aircraft platform, thus simulating a complete operation from the new terminal. This is a key milestone within operational preparation activities, ahead of the next inauguration of the new airport scheduled for January 29, 2025.

It was a charter flight without passengers from the Star Peru airline that took off from Runway 1 of the existing terminal at around 12:00 PM. and landed on Runway 2 of the new airport at 12:15 PM. This test exercise included a short route or overflight, verifying compliance with the necessary standards to ensure safe and efficient operation. In the new terminal, passengers experienced an optimized security process, going through modern controls, also benefiting from advanced tomographic technology that allows for more efficient screening of carry-on luggage.

The test included all the actors involved in a regular airport operation. It is worth highlighting the support of the Jorge Chávez airport community, such as airlines (Sky Perú), ramp operators (Talma), Migrations, SUNAT (Customs), CORPAC, security control services and the National Police of Peru, who They have been actively participating in the tests. In addition, authorities from OSITRAN, the General Directorate of Civil Aeronautics (DGAC) and other airlines participated.

In parallel, tests were carried out on the ground, from the new terminal, with more than 300 people, including airport workers and test passengers who simulated the process of an international trip. “This test is complemented by the tests that we started in October. Today we are simulating a complete process, that is, from the Air Side with all the essential services provided to the aircraft and the terminal was also tested with all the services offered to passengers prior to boarding,” said Diego Cuesta, Project Manager of the ORAT of Lima Airport.

These tests are part of the ORAT (Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer) program, an international methodology that allows evaluating the coordination and integration of the different systems, procedures and equipment necessary to guarantee optimal operation.

At another time, Cuesta pointed out that operational tests not only allow us to test the systems so that they work correctly, but they are also instruments that allow us to correct and find opportunities for improvement to be ready for the start of operations.
Thanks to the previous tests, it will be guaranteed that that day’s operations are carried out with precision, allowing passengers to enjoy modern facilities and be on par with other airports in the world.

From flight coordination to baggage handling, every aspect has been carefully planned to offer an optimal experience. The tests carried out cover every operational detail, from ground services to aerial systems, consolidating Jorge Chávez as a benchmark in airport infrastructure and management.
