Today the first session of the Consultative Unit for Police Reform was held, which was led by the Minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohá, and the Undersecretary for Crime Prevention, Eduardo Vergara.

The latter indicated that “this process is tremendously important for the security agenda and for the Government in General”, since “the police are fundamental institutions for democracy”.

In addition, he stated that “those of us who are working today in the Advisory Council for Reform, the Consultative Unit for Reform and the Executive Secretariat for Reform, do so with the understanding that this is a joint effort.”

“The need to reform the police forces involves processes as important as the administrative ones, the police distribution mechanisms, the internal transparency and accountability structures, as well as the definition and updating of many of the protocols that allow, Through them, the way in which the police relate to the community is defined,” he added.

Likewise, he pointed out that “what we are doing today is defining the work format and the times in which we will meet”, for which “different axes of discussion of this broad consultative unit” will be addressed.

“Above all, we will have permanent communication channels with citizens. As a government we want to give this good news of continuing with a process that is so important for democracy, but above all it is about showing progress, in a consensual manner regarding improvements. necessary for our police,” he added.

For her part, the Minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohá, stated that “what we have proposed at the beginning of this work is, first of all, to thank the support and ask for help, because we need to make a great effort as a country to have policemen who are in a position to face the great challenges that we have in terms of security”.

“This space is a diverse place, where there are going to be different opinions, where we are clear that critical opinions, different points of view, are going to emerge, and that is precisely the value of this instance, but this must be compatible with the need to move forward , and that citizens feel that these efforts translate into changes in their daily lives,” he concluded.
