The first National Park created in Colombia, a natural sanctuary that connects the Amazon with the Andes

Cueva de los Guacharos

Located in the Colombian Massif, it protects 9,000 hectares of Andean forest and strategic biodiversity.

News Colombia.

In the imposing Colombian Massif, where the country’s strategic ecosystems converge and important water sources are born, is the Cueva de los Guácharos National Natural Park. It is one of the most relevant protected areas in southern Colombia and a national benchmark for nature ecotourism.

Created in 1960, it was the first National Natural Park declared in the country. It is located between the departments of Huila, Cauca and Caquetá, and is part of the National System of Protected Areas. Its extension reaches nearly 9,000 hectares of Andean forest, rock formations and strategic ecosystems.

Its location is not minor. The park is surrounded by other protected areas such as the Alto Fragua Indi Wasi National Natural Park and the Serranía de los Churumbelos Auka Wasi National Natural Park, which strengthens an ecological corridor that connects the Amazon with the Central and Eastern mountain ranges. Since 2018 it has had an Ecotourism Planning Plan that regulates visits and promotes responsible practices.

The path to one of the most biodiverse parks in the country

The main access is from the municipality of Pitalito, 188 kilometers south of Neiva. The land journey can take between five and six hours, depending on road conditions. The park, shared by the municipalities of Acevedo, in Huila, and San José del Fragua, in Caquetá, is part of the tourist ring in the south of the department.

Its name comes from the guacharo, a nocturnal bird that lives in caves and was scientifically recorded in 1799 by the German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt. However, the park’s richness goes much further: its forests are also home to spectacled bears, ocelots and a wide variety of orchids and bromeliads.
