The father of the student who died in Champaquí: the teachers "they did their best"

The body of the teenager arrived on Friday night in the Santa Fe city of Rosario and was veiled this Saturday.

The father of Sofía Fernández, the 17-year-old student from the city of Rosario who died of a decompensation on Thursday during the ascent to Mount Champaquí, in Córdoba, thanked the teachers who were with his daughter “until the last moment” because “they did possible”, while the prosecutor investigating the incident stated that the girl died of cardiorespiratory arrest and required her medical history.

The body of the teenager arrived on Friday night in the Santa Fe city of Rosario along with his relatives and was veiled this Saturday, the deputy director of School No. 1,334 María Madre de la Civilización del Amor, Cristina Jelonche, confirmed to Télam.

The rest of the contingent, made up of 70 students and 12 adults, later arrived in this city after the Río Tercero prosecutor, Alejandro Carballo, took a statement from them to advance the investigation of the case.

“Everyone came back very well, although you have to work hard on your spirits,” said Jelonche.

The deputy director of the establishment, located at 4,000 Ayolas Street, specified that another student of the contingent was hospitalized in Córdoba, along with his relatives, because he underwent an operation for appendicitis and was “well.” In addition, she again denied that there were cases of intoxication among the students who traveled.

“My heart aches. The people who were there, the way they helped so that I can bring her here, but that was it, nothing more could be done, I am grateful to everyone”Walter, Sofia’s father

For his part, Walter, Sofia’s father, said this Saturday: when “I went to look for her, they had already told me what had happened. My heart aches, the people who were there, the way they helped so that I can bring her here, but that was it, nothing more could be done, I am grateful to everyone”.

The man said that his daughter had “mild” stomach upset before traveling with his schoolmates to Córdoba, to make the traditional ascent to Mount Champaquí.

“I saw her well, she was very enthusiastic, she wanted to do that excursion, the sisters had done it,” Walter told Cadena 3 in Rosario.

“We let him go, like had a medical dischargeshe had a thyroid but it was controlled, she had it well and I don’t know… this happened,” he added.

Walter said that he spoke “with the teachers who were with her until the last moment” who “did their best” to save her life, but “it is a very high area, impossible, they had to wait for the helicopter but my baby was no longer there, I can’t blame them for that.”

The investigation

Prosecutor Carballo reported that the autopsy practiced on the adolescent’s body determined that died of cardiorespiratory arrestToday he will request medical reports from the institutions where he was treated in Rosario.

“The minor suffered a decompensation when she was in transit to the top of the hill,” the prosecutor said in radio statements, adding that “Faced with this situation, the girl was assisted by paramedics led by this group of 70 students and 10 adults from the Rosario educational institution.”

He added that “since she did not improve, they summoned a helicopter, but the weather conditions prevented the descent”, so “they tried to lower the girl on the back of a mule, they made a stretch, but she suffered a severe decompensation again and despite the attempts resuscitation with a defibrillator and technical elements could not be saved”.

The prosecutor indicated that, according to what Sofía’s father declared, “The girl had a delicate health condition prior to undertaking the excursion, although she had medical authorization with a series of recommendations that were complied with.”

One of them was that the girl did not carry a backpack, like the rest of her classmates, but was carried by a mule.

“During the tour there were episodes of vomiting, but they also manifested themselves in Rosario, so we will require the medical history from that city,” added the prosecutor of the town of Río Tercero.

The Santa Fe Ministry of Education confirmed that the field trip was authorized and that the school met all the requirements, such as bringing paramedics with the contingent. He also hired a guide, although it is not essential.

The deputy director of the María Madre de la Civilización del Amor school said that “sometimes it is judged in the media and on social networks” without knowing details.

“They (students) are not taken to a place we don’t know, or out in the open. We hire local people, we bring paramedics,” Jelonche said.

“There are things that are fatality”he added, and explained that after the tragic event “school authorities, the priest (it is a confessional establishment) and the legal representative traveled to accompany Sofia’s father, the teachers and the rest of the boys.”

Jelonche maintained that he still does not know if classes will resume on Monday, but he assured that “they will not be normal, it will be a reunion job, on Monday or whenever.”
