The FA’s dilemma: maintain influence in the Convention to strengthen ties with Boric or make room for other political forces

The FA's dilemma: maintain influence in the Convention to strengthen ties with Boric or make room for other political forces

One of the 25 most influential women in the world – according to The Financial Times– and one of the 100 women of 2021 -according to the BBC, were some of the recognitions that the president of the Constitutional Convention (CC), Elisa Loncon, had, who will end this role on January 4, after six months in office, together with vice president Jaime Bassa. A duo that complemented the technical aspect with the symbolic, different from what is required in this “second half”, according to some sectors of the Convention, who now bet on a more political and communicational doll, in conjunction with the technical dye, ahead of the starting plebiscite.

Different collectives and groups have already made their names known, however, within the Broad Front (FA) some of its constituents acknowledged that they are still analyzing the scenario, where for now there are two visions. One of them is to distance himself from the executive table, for now having Bassa in the vice presidency, and before the critical gaze of some sectors due to the existence of a kind of “hegemony” of the Broad Front and “concentration of political power”, having now to a broad front as President-elect of the Republic. In several of the other political spaces of the CC they think that it is important that other actors have the possibility of leading the process that is coming.

The second vision is related to the advantages of having Boric in La Moneda, since he will be the one who will lead the country when the exit plebiscite is held. In this context, they see that it would be positive to have this direct route with La Moneda, and because of the possibility of carrying out political management also in Congress with the parties that have declared themselves in collaboration. “We know that some may think that power is being concentrated in a pure political actor and it is understandable, and that is on the table today, but so is thinking that the presence of the Broad Front in the board can help a lot in the understanding and the political decline of the exit plebiscite, “said one of the members of this bench in the CC, adding that” we have nothing closed yet. “

Along these lines, the constituent Daniel Stingo argued that this “is highly debatable” and that “there are no absolute recipes.” “Someone could say ‘but, hey, it is a lot of political power for the same group’, the President of the Republic will be there and the president or vice president of the Convention will be there. But, on the other hand, you can see it as a Complement, what better than to be from the same group and work at the same time, jointly, coordinated, because the President-elect has already declared that he is not going to influence or guide anything, but to work in coordination. Some may wonder ‘but why as Frente Amplio you will not want to compete, if you can reach agreements with others, ‘but some may say’ hey, well, leave a little for the rest, ‘”he said.

Names, in any case, have already been shuffling, such as Amaya Álvez, who – they say in the FA – might not be so interested. Christian viera It is also a name that haunts, and that of Fernando Atria “It is always present,” they admitted.

The director of the School of Government and Communications of the Central University, Marco Moreno, considered that the elected president, Gabriel Boric, “signed a doctrine” when he said that he did not want a partisan Convention. “A partisan Convention, at the service of our Government, does not correspond,” said Boric. Along these lines, the analyst pointed out that, given that statement, “it clearly means that he wants to mark a reasonable distance from two jobs, from two functions that are different.”

Therefore, Moreno said that “what can help the Government the most is that it does not mix with the rest, so that the Government does not open a front of conflict or something that generates more tension, because it will have enough (…) The most reasonable thing would be for the Broad Front to be able to support other representatives with whom they have had an understanding in recent times, such as the Socialist Collective, Non-Neutral Independents, in such a way as to show a certain willingness to seek agreements with other forces and not fall into a hegemonic logic “, he stated.

Interested and interested in competing

Yesterday the first to formalize her candidacy for the table was the constituent and scientific antofagastina Cristina Dorador, by the Constituent Social Movements. She underlined being “convinced that I can contribute in opening spaces and transversal dialogues that allow addressing the complexity of current and future challenges.” Her name is valued in other sectors, especially for being independent and for being a woman, in the context of parity. The journalist also made her choice Patricia politzer, constituent of Non-Neutral Independents, who stated that “if I convene a large majority of the Convention, here I am available to work with all the energy and strength that I have.” Its name generates support among independents, sectors of the center-left and center-right, which highlight the communicational management that it could have.

In the case of the Communist Party, he raised the letter of Barbara Sepulveda, although clarifying that it may also be for some of the deputy vice presidencies, as stated by the PC constituent Marcos Barraza, who emphasized that “we are not clinging to an exclusive idea.” He affirmed that the FA is his “privileged partner” to reach agreements and that, to outline the new table, “the consideration of the technical profile is not enough, there must be an express commitment to the transformations that the people and peoples of Chile they are suing. “

The names of Ricardo Montero Y Cesar Valenzuela They are the ones that are being considered for now within the Socialist Collective, a space where the center-right looks favorably on someone to support, as in the Approval Collective, because in the ruling party they already consider it almost ruled out to carry a proper name for the presidency and executive vice-presidency, focusing the interest in doing so with a letter for the deputy vice-presidencies, a space that in the first stage was occupied by the UDI Rodrigo Álvarez. Now, Renovación Nacional and Evópoli are committed to one of their ranks, from the “most open-minded right”, who has representation in one of those deputy vice presidencies. The name that sounds the most is that of the constituent and former minister Christian Monckeberg (RN), although there are also other letters in that community, such as Manuel José Ossandón Lira.

The support of the ruling party for someone from the center-left, yes, has certain “conditions”, such as that the name they support has legal knowledge and that it is about to be efficient with the times, in addition to giving certain guarantees of dialogue with the center-right, in a complex context for the pro-government sector due to internal friction after the elections. The idea is, furthermore, that in exchange for that support to the presidency or executive vice-presidency of some center-left figure, they receive the same support to position Monckeberg in the deputy vice-presidency.

The Plurinational Constituent Coordinator (made up of reserved seats and former members of The People’s List) raised the option of Eric Chinga (Diaguita People) for the presidency and that of Natividad Llanquileo (Mapuche people) for the vice presidency.

Manuel Woldarsky, a member of said group, stated that in his vision the electoral result should not completely permeate this election. “I believe that what happens with the other organs of the exercise of State power should be taken into account, but it should not be the only circumstance to take into account. I am of the opinion that the CC comes to propose to Chile a much more current and, in that sense, my motivation is based on the exercise of plurinationality and leadership, that it is understood as something that we must embrace. I believe that a candidacy from an indigenous people is a good starting point, an excellent candidate is Eric Chinga, “he said. Regarding the need or not to have more “political doll”, he pointed out that in “the circumstances that he leads the unprecedented debate in the history of Chile, I believe that he offers that political capital (…). As long as the person chosen is capable , with critical thinking, that proposes, that does not base its opinions on lies and misinformation, the country will advance “.

Those who run for the presidency and the executive vice-presidency will require 78 votes in favor, that is, an absolute majority of the conventional constituents in office.
