This Saturday, the Plenary of the Broad Front decided that it will maintain its position of rejection of the general social security reform, promoted by the government of Luis Lacalle Pou, but will vote in favor of a few articles that it does see as positive.
The FA “is going to vote negatively on the reform,” the party’s president, Fernando Pereira, told the press, while announcing the creation of a commission that will review one by one the articles in both chambers, both in Deputies as well as in Senators, and “to gradually take those positions that come close to improving people’s quality of life.”
“It is clear that the Broad Front emphatically rejects the reform because, basically, it is very unfair. That is to say, its financing falls on the workers, in more number of years and less amount at the retirement age”, stated Pereira.
But he was emphatic that the articles that are going to receive the approval of the left force “are few” and that they are only those that “may favor the situation of some particular groups and that the Broad Front will not have the foolishness to don’t vote for them.”
The FA Plenary met this Saturday and brought together 170 members who came from all over the country, something that Pereira highlighted as a demonstration of democracy and participatory debate.
The leftist party, he stressed, must create “a highway of political consensus that implies a change in the sign of government to get out of conservatism and enter a path of progressivism that will change people’s lives.”
At the same time, he understood that it is necessary to “build broad fabrics of conversations with society.”
Declaration of the National Plenary on the national situation
The National Plenary of the Broad Front analyzed in depth the situation of our country.
We view with alarm the process of institutional degradation that the Republic is undergoing. The corruption case surrounding the former head of the Presidential Security Service, Alejandro Astesiano, who, according to the most recent information, not only headed a criminal organization dedicated to forging passports, but also carried out other criminal activities; the delivery of the passport to the narco Marset, and the scandal of the delivery of the port terminal until the year 2081, constitute events of enormous gravity that concern and occupy us.
We trust the actions of the Judiciary and the Prosecutor’s Office. We are working with enormous responsibility and firmness to contribute to the clarification of the political responsibilities regarding the facts and to strengthen the institutional mechanisms that allow us to maintain the transparency, security and democratic quality of our country.
The institutional deterioration and the increase in inequality constitute pieces of a model that we do not share, due to its regressive nature for the living conditions of the great national majorities.
The loss of wages, the weakening of collective bargaining, the loss of purchasing power of retirement and pensions and of the population in general, and the increase in child poverty are the main consequences of an economic model that favors the powerful and falls on the backs of the popular sectors.
The government fails to comply with its electoral promises and carries out a plan to dismantle public companies, which favors a few private companies to the detriment of the quality of services and national sovereignty. The minimization of the role of the state is reflected in the policy decisions, plans and programs of the government. The Neptuno project, which privatizes water and is approved without the participation of society, the dismantling of Antel, the privatization of Portland, the reduction of controls in the application of agrochemicals that affect the health of workers and the quality of ecosystems, are just a few examples.
With the same logic, the government model of the coalition imposes without consultation on the educational community a reform with negative changes and in a hurry, without a budget for its implementation and with chaotic management. We emphatically reject the form and content of the government’s educational policies. We protest against the dismantling of co-government at UTEC.
We reject and consider inadmissible the persecution of the popular pots that responded in the hardest moments of the pandemic. The pots cover the absence of the State and today continue to accompany tens of thousands of compatriots in a situation of food insecurity. It is the responsibility of the State to guarantee the right of people to freely choose what they want to eat at their own table.
The Broad Front is mobilized throughout the country, strengthening its territorial organization and its link with society. A Broad Front positioned and firm as the opposition, as the permanent defender of the great majorities, of the institutional and republican stability of the country.
Our militancy, nourished by social struggles and popular leadership, is forging throughout the national territory a broad and unitary social majority that proposes a programmatic and political alternative to the country model of the conservative coalition.
We trust the people and the responsibility of our political force to articulate with humility, depth and firmness a new majority at the departmental and national level, which embodies the dreams and hopes of building a country with a vision of the future, democratic solidity, sovereignty and social justice.
Long live unity!
Long live the Broad Front!
