The F1 engines that will attract the big brands

Formula One’s governing body has approved engine regulations for 2026. A long-awaited move that could lead to the arrival of brands such as Volkswagen Group, Porsche and Audi.

The International Automobile Federation (FIA) said its World Motor Sports Council (WMSC) had also updated the 2022 and 2023 technical rules to address safety concerns, according to Mundo Deportivo.

The new power unit will retain the high-revving 1.6-litre V6s, but will have significantly more electric power and use 100% sustainable fuels.

The current engine generator unit heat element (MGU-H) will be removed. It was a prerequisite already slipped for the brands of the Volkswagen Group to enter.

“The regulations are intended to make it possible and attractive for newcomers to join the sport at a competitive level,” the FIA said.

It added that they were the result of a “collaborative consultation between the FIA and current and potential manufacturers of new PU (power units)”.

Media reports have indicated that Porsche plans to take a 50% stake in Red Bull Technology, the company that makes cars for the current championship leaders.

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner told reporters at last month’s Hungarian Grand Prix that there had been “constructive discussion” with Porsche, but there were still plenty of caveats and hurdles to overcome.

“The first real hurdle for any new manufacturer coming in is the technical regulations for the power unit from 2026,” he said.

Audi has been linked with Sauber, the Swiss-based company that runs the Alfa Romeo team.
