“The most important thing now is to appoint the board of directors, which will execute everything and appoint managers. That’s the issue. They have to give stability (to Petroperú) and suitable people to appoint good managers,” said a source familiar with the state-owned company.

Several names have been floated as candidates for the board of directors, and one that sounds strong is Alejandro Narváez, who chaired the oil company between 2003 and 2004. Recently, Narváez told RPP that Oliver Stark’s board increased the oil company’s losses and that the study by the consulting firm Arthur D. Little, which initially proposed a restructuring of the oil company, has an incorrect diagnosis. He said he is not in favor of the PMO.
“The current administration (the outgoing board) is definitely not the best. They have had seven months to prove that a well-managed company produces results. All they have done is complain and ask for more money,” he said.
“What is happening is that they are maximizing Petroperú’s problem. They are over-emphasizing the problem. All the companies I know in these times of crisis are having a very hard time,” he added.
Narváez is a faithful believer in leftist ideas and state capitalism. In the last elections, he ran for Congress as number 1 on Verónika Mendoza’s list. This year, in a YouTube program, he said that the true contribution of mining is a mockery.
