The ‘evils’ of Soat: premiums grow but there are more claims

The 'evils' of Soat: premiums grow but there are more claims

Between January and September, the new Mandatory Traffic Accident Insurance (Soat) policies amounted to 6.52 million, with a growth of 3.8% compared to the same period in 2021 when these were 6.28 million.

(Owners of vehicles and motorcycles report a shortage of Soat policies).

But only between January and August the claims paid under this product were $1.52 billion, This figure is higher than the $1.16 trillion for the same period last year, showing a growth of 30%.

Likewise, according to the reports of the Information System of Health Care Reports for Traffic Accident Victims, it is verified that, so far in 2022, 777,000 victims have been treated, that is, all those who have needed care in accidents traffic.

According to Ángela Huzgame, director of the Fasecolda Soat Technical Chamber, that figure has already far exceeded that of all of 2021 and this year it is estimated that we will exceed 900,000 victims.

(Fasecolda does not sell the Soat: recommendations so that you do not get scammed).

Another indicator that shows the increase in accidents on the streets and highways of Colombia is in the number of deaths, because until August, According to the Road Safety Agency, deaths reached 5,501, a strong increase of 22% compared to 4,505 with a cutoff in the eighth month of 2021.

For the director of the Soat Technical Chamber, of every 100 deaths from traffic accidents, 87 correspond to drivers or companions on new motorcycles. This is explained because generally the owners of new motorcycles begin to be drivers and many lack skill.

According to Fasecolda, to understand claims, it is understood that for every $100 of premiums paid, how much is needed to pay. In the case of new motorcycles, for every 100 pesos of premiums paid, $258 are needed to pay claims.

In terms of traffic accidents with victims, according to the Fasecolda executive, the most critical departments, proportionally based on their population, are Valle del Cauca, Risaralda and Atlántico.

For Ángela Huzgame, the problem with Soat is that it is increasingly throwing up a red balance and, to date, no effective measures have been taken to curb fraud, counterfeiting and accidents. She mentioned that the losses between January and August amount to $205,000 million, so it can be said that this branch “It is breaking down and starting to become unsustainable, after losses of $193 billion in 2021.”

(What you need to know about the new procedure for Soat and motorcycle licenses).

The lack of transfers of ownership in many motorcycles and some vehicles generate problems for the system, along with fraud due to inflated prices in treatments by health providers, to which is added the restriction in the commission to those who market the product, which in many cases stopped offering it, or purchases with credit cards that are retracted within five days, but that “they leave a policy alive”, they are part of the problems faced by Soat, said the executive.
