The European Union will only recognise “complete and verifiable” results

European Union insists that it cannot recognise CNE results "without evidence"

In a statement, the member countries of the European Union They assured that they will continue working to ensure that the will of the Venezuelan people is respected and to facilitate a dialogue that provides guarantees to both sides, the opposition and the government.

The 27 countries of the European Union (EU) assured that they will only accept and recognize “complete and independently verifiable” results of the presidential elections “to ensure that the will of the Venezuelan people is respected.”

This was stated by a release issued by the office of the High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, this Saturday, August 24.

The EU noted that it remains “extremely concerned” due to the political crisis in Venezuela and stressed that the Venezuelan authorities have not provided “the public evidence necessary to evaluate the electoral process in accordance with the standards indicated by the Panel of Experts of the United Nations Organization (UN).”

In this regard, he urged the National Electoral Council (CNE) to publish and independently verify the voting records of all polling stations. He added that the UN panel has confirmed that a sample of the records published by the opposition contain the security features of the results protocols, “thus confirming its reliability.”

Regarding the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) ruling of August 22, by which they validated the results of the CNE that declared President Nicolás Maduro the winner, the EU recalled that The CNE “is the body legally and constitutionally responsible for the transparent and detailed publication of the official election results.”

The member countries assured that they will continue working to facilitate a dialogue that provides guarantees to both sides (opposition and government) that will lead to “restoration and to solve the current humanitarian and socioeconomic crisis.”

Following the TSJ ruling, Borrell said on August 23 that the bloc would not recognize Maduro’s victory until the data broken down by voting tables and centers was published and verified.

He also said that everyone should be able to review and verify the election results. After almost a month of the process, the information is still unknown, so “we have lost hope that it will happen,” said the official.
