The European Union seeks to accelerate negotiations for a new agreement with Mexico

The objective of this group of legislators, who will be in Mexico from February 22 to 24, is “to obtain first-hand information on the current state of modernization of the Global Agreement between the EU and Mexico and the prospects for its ratification,” he said. the European Parliament in a statement.

The negotiations of the new commercial agreement between the European Union and Mexico (TLCUEM) concluded two years ago, however, little progress has been made, lamented Bernd Lange (S&D, Germany), head of the delegation and president of the INTA commission.

“The EU needs this agreement, especially in a context where we see rising protectionism, an increasingly inward focus from many of our trading partners and a militarization of trade. The modernized agreement can help stabilize the rules-based trading system,” said Lange.

“This visit demonstrates the importance that Parliament attaches to strengthening relations between Mexico and the EU. The modernization of the trade agreement is essential because it will mean that 99% of the products traded between the EU and Mexico will be duty-free, while 98% of the products will be duty-free from the entry into force of the agreement”, said Inmaculada Rodríguez-Piñero Fernández, permanent rapporteur for Mexico.
