The European Union does not include the situation in Nicaragua in its agenda before the UN

The serious crisis of human rights violations in Nicaragua will not be addressed by the European Union (EU) in the agenda that the group of countries from the old continent is taking to the 77th General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) that is being held this week in New York, USA.

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, confirmed at a press conference that the situation in the Central American country is not part of the issues that were addressed at the informal meeting of European foreign ministers that took place on Monday , September 19, at the EU headquarters at the United Nations.

«I am sorry to say it, Nicaragua is something that matters a lot to the European Union. And for me personally, since you already know that I am Spanish. I know very well what Nicaragua means and who is governing the country. But I have to say that today, in general, at the meeting of foreign ministers we have not talked about Nicaragua. That does not mean that we do not care, “said the head of diplomacy of the European Parliament.

Borrell stated that, although the main issue is Russia’s war against Ukraine, the European Union “remains committed to addressing other challenges and crises in other parts of the world” such as the crisis in Nicaragua that it has been going through since April 2018. try to choose between Ukraine and others, we can do everything at the same time. We care about Ukraine and we care about the rest of the world, and that is what we will do during this critical week,” he noted.
