The EU declares the ambassador of the Ortega regime “non grata”

Unión Europea, Nicaragua

The European Union declared this Monday, October 10, “non grata” the head of the Nicaraguan mission in that community of countries, Zoila Yanira Müller Goff, confirmed a official statement.

Müller Goff, was appointed to the position by the Daniel Ortega regime in June 2022, according to the presidential agreement 92-2022, in which she is designated as the representative of the EU and before the European Atomic Energy Community.

The measure was taken in Brussels as a reciprocal response to the decision of the Nicaraguan authorities to expel the EU ambassador to Nicaragua, Bettina Muscheidtwho was declared non grata on September 28 and had to leave the country on Saturday, October 1 under accusations of interference.

The decision was made at the request of the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security, Josep Borrell, who had already described as “hostile actions” the expulsion of the diplomat and the breaking of diplomatic relations between Nicaragua and the Netherlands.

“The EU considers Nicaragua’s decision unjustified,” assured the statement released by Borrell’s spokesman, Mr. Pedro Stano, in which they reaffirmed the union’s commitment to the Nicaraguan people and the defense of democracy, the rule of law and human rights.

The rupture of diplomatic relations with the Netherlands was announced by Ortega in a public act, in which he assured that the Kingdom of the Netherlands informed him that it would not continue financing a hospital in the Nicaraguan Caribbean.

What Ortega omitted in his speech was that the decision of the Dutch to end the financing of the hospital was due to the deterioration of the country’s democratic structures and human rights violations, which had already caused its suspension in 2018.

Four years ago, the regime responded with a brutal crackdown on thousands of citizens who took to the streets to protest a failed social security reform. According to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), at least 355 people died and more than two thousand were injured.

Currently, there are more than 205 political prisoners and Nicaraguans have their right to demonstrate violated after the imposition since 2018 of a de facto police state, which prevents the holding of protests and meetings that the authorities may consider to threaten the security of the community. country.

Faced with questions from the international community, Ortega has responded with insults and disqualifications. The same week of the expulsion of the EU ambassador in Managua, the rupture of diplomatic relations with the Netherlands, also attacked the Ambassador Hugo F. Rodriguezratified by the United States Senate, and publicly declared it “non grata” in an escalation of Ortega against the international community.

According to the EU press release, the current political crisis in Nicaragua must be resolved through genuine dialogue between the government and the opposition. The EU remains open to dialogue with Nicaragua, “as long as it is carried out in a respectful manner.”

In addition to the attacks on the EU and the United States, Ortega insulted the president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, for asking for the freedom of political prisoners, and he did the same with the undersecretary for the Western Hemisphere, Brian Nichols. The first he called “lap dog” and the second “bulldog” during the act of 43rd anniversary of the Police in Managua.
