The elected president of Chile, the far-right José Antonio Kast, expressed this Monday his rejection of the decision of the Government of send humanitarian aid to Cubain the midst of the crisis that the island is going through after the United States sanctions on the countries that supply it with oil.
“I do not agree with giving direct economic aid to a government that has created a dictatorship for more than 60 years and that has put the Cuban people in a very disadvantaged, inhuman situation,” Kast said at the press point of his first public activity after the holidays.
Last week, the Government of President Gabriel Boric announced that it will allocate one million dollars to the island through the Chile Fund against Hunger and Poverty, channeled through Unicef.
Faced with criticism from the opposition and some Christian Democratic sectors, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alberto Van Klaveren, clarified that the aid is not directed to the Government or the Communist Party of Cuba.
“It is not (a help) to the Government of Cuba, it is not (a help to the Communist Party of Cuba,” insisted the chancellor, who He described the situation on the island as a “humanitarian drama.”

Kast and the speech of the Chilean extreme right against Cuba
Kast, who will take office as president of Chile on March 11maintained that, beyond the obstruction in trade relations with the Caribbean country, “the biggest blockage” that Cuba faces is preventing the development of citizenship, entrepreneurship and the arrival of technology.
Furthermore, he stated that “any humanitarian aid necessarily has to happen because democracy is demanded,” something that, he said, he has not seen.
In contrast, the President Boric defended the decision and reiterated his call “to end this inhumane blockade.”as the United Nations Assembly has requested on multiple occasions.
“The blockade that the United States has imposed on Cuba and that has worsened in recent weeks is criminal and an attack on the human rights of an entire people,” he stated.

Washington’s increased pressure on Havana, especially after the attack on Venezuela and the capture of Nicolás Maduro, has deepened the energy crisis in Cuba.
In late January, President Donald Trump signed an order imposing tariffs on those who supply fuel to the islandwhich has slowed shipments and generated a paralyzing impact on the economy and daily life.
