The effect of inflation on prices of ‘corrientazo’ and empanadas

The effect of inflation on prices of 'corrientazo' and empanadas

High inflation gives no respite. This is indicated by the most recent data from Dane on the CPI that in April, in its annual variation, it reached 9.23%.

(This is how some candidates reacted to the rise in inflation).

Despite this figure, the food division was higher, since the greatest impact on prices was suffered by this segment, whichs are reflected in the consumption of the popular ‘corrientazo’, and even in the preparation and sale of empanadastwo traditional dishes among Colombians.

According to the director of Dane, Juan Daniel Oviedo, in April 2022, the greatest price increases were recorded for cassava (106.03%), plantains (78.64%) and potatoes (77.47%), three products with a large proportion in the ‘corrientazo’.

for his parte, in the figures for April, an inflation of 32.05% is recorded in beef; while the eggs already accumulate 35.17%.

It should be noted that the potato, one of the hardest hit products so far this year, had a slight correction in April of 0.27%, which took the annual figure to 77.47%. However, it is too early to say that its price is going down.

“It does not mean that potato prices have decreased in all cities”warned Oviedo, who also pointed out that the potato has, on this occasion, a neutral contribution, where it did not contribute basic points to inflation.

(Annual inflation in April was 9.23%, the highest in 21 years).

“We are correcting from the maximum of February and March”, the director of the Dane pointed out.
On the other hand, poultry meat and onion already registered an annual behavior of 24.82% and 27.82%, respectively, highlighting the small correction that white meat proteins are showing.

For your partis the only product that seems to have withstood the inflationary blow, although it also registers increases, although not so notable is rice.

These rises would be leading to the price of a ‘corrientazo’ in some restaurants being even double last year’s.

EFFECT ON EMPANADAS

This same behavior is being reflected in the prices of empanadas, whose ingredients such as chicken, meat and potatoes remain high and impact the pockets of citizens.

“These are products used for restaurant meals for breakfast and lunch, therefore, these increases translate into increased prices for dishes, ‘corrientazo’, fast foods, empanadas, among others,” said the director of the Dane, this Thursday.

He added that the ‘corrientazo’, the empanadas and the hamburgers explain the 11 points contributed by the division of restaurants and hotels in April. “What we see in particular is that the ‘corrientazo’ and the empanadas follow a growing path with an annual variation of 14.37%”, concluded.
