The economic impact of the Dominican plastic sector

The plastics industry in the Dominican Republic it generates 41,485 direct and indirect jobs and contributes more than 11,127 million pesos a year to the treasury, according to a study on its economic impact.

38.2% of the jobs were generated directly in the plastic production in the country, 47.8% indirectly and 14.0% induced.

The data is contained in the study “Contribution of Plastics Sector to the Dominican Economy” and were released by the Vice Ministry of Industrial Development, of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and MSMEs (MICM).

“Plastics are common in day-to-day modern life due to the characteristics that make them malleable, waterproof, heat resistant, electrically insulating, and other useful properties in the manufacture of a diversity of products”, explains the document.

During 2021, exports of Plastic products they reached 546.0 million dollars, representing 4.7% of the total exports of the Dominican economy.

During that year, he adds, companies under national regimes exported 299.5 million dollars, equivalent to 54.8% of the Plastic productswhile those of free zone regimes 45.2%, after reaching 246.6 million dollars.

It is required that the Dominican Republic imported 1,903 million dollars in plastic products during 2021, 50.8% under national regime companies and 49.2% under free zones.

26,938 tons recycled

During 2021, some 26,938 tons of plastic wasteof which 90% was destined for exports.

The study was carried out by the firm Despradel y Asociados (DASA), with the support of the Ministry of Industry, the Dominican Association of the Plastics Industry (Adisplat) and the Plastics Training and Research Center (CCIP).
